Jonathan Sarfati: Surely there must be some wins by Dr Pomeroy. He must have won plenty to qualify for the top 12 several times, as well as being one of NZ's top classical scholars.
Oct-19-06  Benzol: <Jonathan> I'd love to see some more of his games, particularly wins but I don't think I have any in my archive. Hopefully someone else may have.

Jonathan Sarfati: Dr Pomeroy is a Professor of Classics at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, and has won teaching awards http://www.victoria.ac.nz/Classics/... NB: in Britain and Commonwealth countries such as NZ, "professor" is a title only given to the highest rank of university lectures, not just to any lecturer as in the USA.

Jonathan Sarfati: I learned the sad news that Dr Pomeroy died yesterday. He will be sadly missed.

As for his profession as a classical scholar, from what I've heard from former students, he was a rare university professor who combined high academic achievements with great teaching skills. Here is an article about his retirement in 2019: https://www.wgtn.ac.nz/slc/about/ne...

GrahamClayton: Pomeroy played in the New Zealand Championship several times when it was a 12-player round robin of the 12 best available players in the country. His best result was equal 4th at Dunedin 1975 with IM Ortvin Sarapu and FM Richard Sutton, behind only future IM Paul Garbett, IM William Fairhurst, and Lindsay Cornford.
