Phony Benoni: Interesting how both his games are wins with White against the same player in the same tournament! I wonder how that came about?

The 10-mover definitely smells of skittles play.

Stonehenge: A photo can be found here:

<Champion of all India-Burma Army Air Force chess players is Sgt. Joseph Balint, of the 333rd Airdrome Squadron, Barrackpore. Balint copped the title in a recent contest held at Hastings Mill.>

Apr-06-25  stone free or die: "Cpl. Balint learned to play chess in Central park while attending high school. During the depression years he played with unemployed men in the park, some of whom moved the pawns and knights around for 10, 12, and 14 hours a day just to pass the time of day"

There's also a photo of him, in uniform, giving a simul (presumably in Panama).

(Thx <nca> for the clipping)

Apr-06-25  stone free or die: Not sure he was reassigned from Panama to Japan - but maybe.

I did find this curio of him - with mention of his chess prowess - in a group shot of kitchen staff at the Hotel Astor (NYC):

Looks like his day gig was being a chef after the war.
