Tabanus: Francis J. Wellmuth, compiler of 'The Golden Treasury of Chess', Philadelphia 1943.

According to http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/... (Chess Notes no. 5439) there is a death record for a person named Frank J. Wellmuth: born on 27 January 1866 in Missouri and died on 29 December 1943 in California. But that's not him?

<5439. Francis J. Wellmuth (C.N. 5430)

Russell Miller (Camas, WA, USA) and W.D. Rubinstein (Aberystwyth, Wales) have been examining on-line sources, and particularly the website ancestry.com, for information about Francis J. Wellmuth.

There is a death record for a person named Frank J. Wellmuth: born on 27 January 1866 in Missouri and died on 29 December 1943 in California. His mother’s surname was given as Ferney. The federal census of 1880 listed a Frank Welmouth (born circa 1866 in Missouri) who was attending school in Saint Joseph, Missouri and living with his mother, Celia Welmouth, a widow, and his siblings.>

I would say it's likely is him. The California Chess Reporter gives him as having a ranch in Hawthorne, CA, and being involved in the local chess scene (or at least following the local CA scene):

Tabanus: http://www.chess.com/forum/view/gen...: <Interesting, he always thought that Wellmuth sent it, but allegedly Wellmuth had died... puzzling...>

Ancestry.com also has a "Francis Wellmuth" who died 31 July 1960 in Cook County, Illinois, see http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/f.... But this looks like a child or young person? The Illinois Death Index also has Francis Wellmuth d. 31 July 1960 but without age.

The only two other records of <Francis> Wellmuth is 1) Francis J. Wellmuth living as clerk in Saint Joseph, Missouri in 1888, and 2) Francis J. Wellmuth in NY Passenger lists, 29, student from Nova Scotia, arriving 12 May 1894 from Naples, Italy. The first must the same as Frank J. Wellmuth born 27 Jan 1866 in Missouri (and d. 1943), but the second one?

Feb-04-15  zanzibar: There a couple of references to him being a Catholic priest (but unreferenced).

But the CA Chess Reporter (CCR) is more reliable, and it reports he had a ranch in Hawthorne (in LA!, but that was back in early 1900's). Owning private property would be very unpriest-like.

That aside, there's this:

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/...

Which gives a 1940 census:

<Name: Frank J Wellmuth
Birth: abt 1866 - Missouri
Residence: 1935 - Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California Residence: Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California>

That, and the CCR rises to a level of certainty that I vote <Frank J. Wellmuth> dob 1866-01-27 (MO), dod 1943-12-29 (CA).

Feb-04-15  zanzibar: That is to say, the ancestry 1940 census (giving the exact CA location as LA), the CCR report validates and verifies the good work of Russell Miller (Camas, WA, USA) and W.D. Rubinstein (Aberystwyth, Wales) (and Tab?) finding the death record.

He is not hard to find, that's Franklin J. Wellmuth in Los Angeles.

MissScarlett: St. Joseph Daily Herald, July 10th 1897, p.5:

<Mr. Francis J. Wellmuth, who has just completed his first course in theology at St. Francis Seminary, Milwaukee, is in the city visiting friends.>

St. Joseph News-Press, July 28th 1911, p.6:

<Frank J. Wellmuth, a well known baseball player in the days when Leo Muchenberger's team of St. Joseph was the semi-professional champion of the Middle West, is here for a short visit. Wellmuth is now in the hotel business at Los Angeles and is on his way home from Boston.>

FSR: <A book review on page 88 of the September-October 1943 American Chess Bulletin stated regarding Francis J. Wellmuth that ‘practically a lifetime was spent by the editor, now in his 70s, in keeping abreast of the activities of the world’s best players and making careful selection of their games, going back also as far as the time of Ruy López’. Why, then, was Wellmuth’s name later removed from the book, The Golden Treasury of Chess, with authorship eventually credited to Al Horowitz?> https://www.chesshistory.com/winter...
Apr-10-25  stone free or die: An old topic - but apparently there is new wrinkles from time-to-time:

<Latest update: 22 March 2025.>

Apr-10-25  stone free or die: Wellmuth wrote the original edition of the book, by himself. Horowitz came aboard after.
Apr-10-25  stone free or die: Aside - What does <Edward Winter> actually mean when he says <"Last updated"> ??!!??

I actually just used Wayback to compare the most recent archived version (Dec 17, 2024) with the current version (Apr 9, 2025).

I wish Winter would somehow markup the new or changed portions of his iconic articles - but alas, all we have to work with is his postscripts at the bottom of the page (aka "Last updated" notices).

I copied the text from the two versions into my handy Emacs editor - which has a very nice <ediff-buffers> function for comparing results.

The first diff I found between the <Dec-24> and <Apr-25> version was this:

<Latest update: 16 May 2022.> <Latest update: 22 March 2025.>

Huh?!?!

This suggests the only change is the <Last update [sic]> tag itself!

What the heck?!

.

Apr-10-25  stone free or die: ( I suppose, since I only compared the text, a new photo or diagram may have been added?)
Apr-10-25  stone free or die: Since we're here, and since we have so many more qualified genealogists than myself on <CG>, could I ask if some researcher could determine his dob/dod?

I believe I posited a possibility above (under the <z> monicker )

FSR: <stone free or die> I entered the DOB/DOD you (or rather your alter ego) previously nominated.
Apr-10-25  stone free or die: Thanks <FSR>, we've both grateful.
