 | | MissScarlett: The Dublin <Daily Express>, February 6th 1863, p.3: <We regret that we have to announce the death of Mr. Washington Hannah, the distinguished chess amateur, whose name and reputation must be familiar to our readers. As a resident in Brighton for many years, he did much to promote the interests of chess in that town. Latterly, during his residence in London, he was a constant attendant at the St. James's Chess Club, where he played frequently. Mr. Hannah greatly distinguished himself in a match with the celebrated chess-player, Herr Lowe, at the Cigar Divan, in 1857, on which occasion he won no less than 11 games to his opponent’s six, while four were drawn. His zeal and enthusiasm in the cause of chess were evinced in striking manner during the late Congress by his engaging in both tournays [sic], notwithstanding that he was then suffering acutely from disease of the heart, the malady to which he has now succumbed. As an eminent chess amateur, a kind friend, and a most amiable and pleasant companion, Mr. Hannah will long be remembered with esteem and affection by a large circle of friends. He was only 36 years of age.> |

 | | MissScarlett: The <Brighton Gazette> of August 20th 1863, p.5, notes the death of Benjamin, <son of James Lee Hannah, M.D.> on the 12th of August. No age given, but as he matriculated (enrolled) at Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1850, he would have been 31/32. His brief entry in the <Alumni Cantabrigienses> supports the notion that he failed to graduate. |
