Jonathan Sarfati: George Trundle is good bloke and was long a regular at tournaments in NZ, and he was always a friendly face in my junior days long ago. Now he is a chess benefactor by funding an annual tournament in Auckland to give players a chance for an IM norm.

He was a POW during WW2, and chess was one of the things that kept him sane, as I remember in a newspaper interview in the 1980s, and as he explains in this recording and transcript. http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/media/s...

His best result was runner up in the 1967 NZ Champs, behind Ortvin Sarapu and equal with Bruce R Anderson and P. Harraway. This was one of the few open champs in those days, with GM Yuri Averbakh and some Australian IMs coming over, so it was a fine result in such strength.

Jonathan Sarfati: George never pretended to be a great player, but did a lot for chess in NZ.

Richard Taylor: <RedShield: Six games from a sixty-year career, intimations of a minor chess master.> I have games against him. I know he was strong when he was young. Clearly this doesn't show the extent of his chess games. He learnt chess in a POW camp in Italy in WWII and it became a big part of his life. He also played tennis. He gave a lot of money to chess so that tournaments could be played. One was the Zonal here about 2004 which I went to watch. He was important as a significant "character" in the chess world.

Richard Taylor: Now that Peter Stuart has died there is a lot of data he had and it may include more of George's games. He wasn't a master but was pretty sharp but for some reason all the games here are losses.

Also I could ferret some from the old NZ Chess magazines I had. Stuart had a huge collection of chess materia though, not just for NZ.

Richard Taylor: I won a B Grade Rapid and George complimented me on my win. He could be very supportive. He was very nervous when playing...
