perfidious: Just came to this page and was surprised to learn of Jim's passing. Sorry to see that another good one has left us.

Jim was a tall, heavyset redhead with a deep, resonant voice, originally from Oklahoma. Used to see him at tournaments a fair amount during the 1980s, though we only met once at the board, a game which saw me fortunate to chalk up a full point, as I got in hot water on the black side of a Panov Caro-Kann, one of the favourites of this sharp, aggressive player, who also loved to play the King's Gambit and the Schliemann. In contrast to all this aggro at the board, he was quite decent to spend time with away from the sixty-four squares.
