GrahamClayton: Thomas Mautner (b. 1935, Prague, Czechoslovakia). Thomas was sent to Norway by his parents in the late 1930's after the German annexation of Czechoslovakia. In the middle of WW2 he was smuggled across the Norwegian/Swedish border in a truck. Mautner emigrated to Australia in 1965 and settled in Canberra, where he has lived ever since. He worked in the School of Philosophy at the Australian National University from 1965 to 1998.

Thomas wrote the chess column in the "Canberra Times" during the 1960's, and was Canberra Chess Club champion in 1968.
