MissScarlett: Illustrated Sporting & Dramatic News, October 23rd 1897, p.312:

<One of the most characteristic figures of the chess community passed away last week in M. Claude Louis Eugene Febvret, who, for over a score of years had been a regular habitue of Simpson's Divan. "The old Frenchman," as he was familiarly called - he was seventy-two when he died - had won the esteem of a multitude of chess players. He was a vivacious and rapid player, and many a young amateur has had his enthusiasm for the game intensified by practice with M. Febvret. His inability to speak English did not prevent his natural amiability from asserting itself to all who came in contact with him, and, if he never achieved fame in matches or tournaments, his absence from his favourite seat at the Divan will be keenly felt for many a day to come.>
