MissScarlett: <Gaige (Chess Personalia) has only a Thomas Taverner born in 1856. William Greenwood Walker's 'A Selection of Games at Chess...' (1836) lists as suscribers a 'Taverner, L., esq.' and a 'Taverner, I., esq.' (p.279). Joseph Kling's 'The Chess Euclid' (1849) lists as a subscriber a 'Taverner, M., Esq.'. Bell's Life in London (3 Jan. 1841, p.1) has a 'J. Taverner' in a list of subscribers to a fund for de la Bourdonnais' widow.>

Hmmm, without an initial, the prospects for identification are decidely dim. Try searching for <Taverner> in the <BNA> and you get hits for thousands of taverns.
