Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-06-14  Karpova: Wiarda translated Capablanca's 'Chess Fundamentals' into German: http://books.google.de/books/about/...
Feb-24-14  JimNorCal: I don't have Edward Lasker's "Chess Secrets" at hand but I remember him describing a tournament (probably Dusseldorf 1908) which had a player named Wiarda who was a bit of a "dark horse" (an outsider who was not expected to win).

Wiarda had done very well at least in the early rounds.

Feb-27-14  JimNorCal: Below is a snip from the Ed. Lasker book. The description from Dusseldorf 1908 is fascinating, since Em. Lasker played a WC match with GM Tarrasch while the tournament was in progress. Besides the Hauptturnier (Major) tournament that Wiarda and Ed Lasker played in, there was an International tournament won by Frank Marshall.

"In the beginning I [Ed Lasker] did rather well, drawing my first round game against the favorite Koehnlin, the champion of Bavaria, who actually won the tournament and defeating a 17 year old "dark horse" by the name of Wiarda, who came second. But I made only a half point in the five games I played with the rest of the prize winners..." Note that the group of "other prize winners" included Alekhine, playing outside of Russia for the first time.

Feb-28-14  Karpova: <16th German Chess Federation Congress - Hauptturnier A> in Düsseldorf, Germany, August 3 to 19, 1908: http://www.edochess.ca/tournaments/...

Wiarda came in 2nd with 10.5/13, behind Köhnlein with 11.0/13.

Feb-28-14  JimNorCal: Thanks I had not come across edo chess before. So much info!
