Phony Benoni: The three-volume set of Alekhine's games edited by Khalifman also cuts off after 71.Kg1. It's possible that Wiarda announced mate (possibly irritated that the fifteen-year-old Alekhine was making him play it out), and Alekhine resigned immediately.

By the way, 72.Kf3 and 72.Kd1 are also mate in two. I think the latter of these leads to the most artistic position, with all the pieces on the first rank.

Mar-28-10  sneaky pete: White (also known as G. Wiarda, Elberfeld) actually played 72.Qf2+ .. and mated on move 78. 72.Kd2 Kf1 73.Qe1# is suggested in the tournament book as a cosmetic operation in case Wiarda contemplated publishing <Meine besten gefälschten Partien>. The game is from the Hauptturnier A of the Düsseldorf tournament, round 9, August 12, as stated above.
Dec-25-15  joddon: Jakov played oustandingly here....as Alex picks a rather too simple opening and underestimates thetempo of blacks knight......in the end......bringinging pieces back home especially with the bishop in the opening has proven to be unjust.....it delays building any kind of attacking position with which white could defend with against blacks territory....a very territorial fight which leaves Alex handicapped!!
