Kibitzer's Corner
Nov-01-22  JohnBoy: Russ went from 1600 to 2300 in about six months ~1977. And ever the nicest guy. I only played him once. Drawn but tricky endgame I managed to screw up and lost.

perfidious: Russ beat our top board in the first round of the National HS championship in May 1977; my losing that round also left us behind from the start, which we only managed to put right in the final round.
Nov-02-22  Gregor Samsa Mendel: I ran into Russ a couple of times in the late 70's at Southern California high school tournaments. The one time we played, I tried to steer the game into an opposite-color bishops ending. I was successful but it turns out that such endings are lost when one side is three pawns down.
