HELGE HOKENSEN
(born Oct-21-1885, died Dec-09-1960, 75 years old) Norway (federation/nationality United States of America)

[what is this?]

Helge "Harry" Amandus Hokensen (aka Haakensen/Hokenson), born Kristiania NOR; died Sonoma, CA USA.

He came from Norway to the USA in 1907. He was an Army musician for about 20 years, and moved around a lot before settling in California as a hospital ward assistant.

History
The western chess tournament, which begins Monday, Aug. 19, at Excelsior, Lake Minnetonka, will, according to expectation of President E. P. Elliott, be largely attended this year. The following is a list of the participants... Wyoming will be represented by H. Hokensen of the regular army, Fort Russell... (1)

The city championship tournament opened at the local club Nov. 1, 1912. This was a very interesting event... then when we add two of the prize-winners at the last western tournament, Messrs. Michelsen and Hokensen, now both members of the Minneapolis club, we feel safe in predicting a very interesting session. (2)

North Dakota's State Chess association this year, holds its annual tournament at Bismarck, on Feb. 22. President Burke is confident of a large attendance of strong players notably Mr. Widemeyer of Rolla and Mr. Hokenson of Grand Forks, formerly of Minneapolis. (3)

L. J. Isaacs won the first prize in the annual Washington birthday tournament at the Chicago Chess and Checker club. Second prize was divided by H. Hokensen, B. Gelman, W. Ringer, and B. A. Czaikowski. (4)

Jose R. Capablanca's next engagement is at the Baltimore Chess Association on Saturday. At the Franklin Chess Club of Philadelphia he made a score of 14-0, with two drawn against A. Klang, secretary of the Y.M.C.A., and H. Hokensen. (5)

The tournament of the Pennsylvania State Chess Association with twenty entries was a marked success. Moon and Boni tied for first place with a perfect score. The third prize was divided between Schimselewitz and Hokensen, while Ruth, Burton, Driver, Jackson and Salzberg shared the fourth prize. (6)

H. Hokensen chess champion of the Western Electric Chess and Checker club, of Chicago, one of the largest and most important clubs of this king in the country, dropped into the Y a few evenings ago and inquired if there were any chess players in the city. A. Palmi, local expert, was sent for, and the two were soon "battling." (7)

Playing 48 games simultaneously, Frank J. Marshall, champion chess player of the United States, gave an interesting exhibition at the Hotel Blackhawk Friday evening. He won 42 games, lost two and conceded four draws to players who still had good games well past the midnight hour... The other winner was H. Hokensen of East Moline... (8)

Helge Hokensen yesterday filed suit in the superior court, asking that he be awarded an interlocutory degree of divorce on the ground of desertion. (9)

Next Tuesday night at eight p.m. an even of unusual interest to chess players will take place at the Co-op Creamery in Petaluma, when Harry Hokenson of Imola will engage simultaneously twenty selected players from the Petaluma Chess Club. (10) Harry Hokensen, Imola chess wizard, proved his superiority over other devotees of the game last night, when he defeated 11 out of 12 opponents engaged simultaneously at the recreation hall of the Co-op Creamery in Petaluma. (11)

A team of ten players from the Pittsburg Chess Club (California), which is one of the best in the northern part of the State, will arrive in Vallejo Saturday evening, January 28 and give battle to the local club. The Vallejo club has been coached by H. Hokenson of Imola, Napa county, and has added one strong player, Raymond Richards to its team, and is confident of winning this match. (12)

Stonehenge: Chessdryad has a Harry Hokensen. I have found a Harry Hokensen, born in Norway Oct 21 188<4>, died in Sonoma Dec 9 1960.

Here we have a <Helge> Hokensen, born in Oslo Oct 21 188<5>: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903...

Tabanus: Yes, <Harry> Hokensen of Santa Rosa, Calif. is mentioned several times ca. 1954-55 for sending in correct solutions to chess problems. An older man? There is

NAME: <Harry> Hokensen BIRTH: 21 Oct <1884> DEATH: 9 Dec 1960 - Sonoma

and also

<Helge> Hokensen b. 21 Oct. <1885> in Oslo, Norway:

arrived in US 3 May 1907 (passport application 1924)

lives 1910 in Laramie, Wyoming (US 1910 Census)

lives Sept. 1918 in Hog Island, Philadelphia (WW 1 card) (and H. Hogensen played chess in Philadelphia apparently only 1918-19)

is soldier 1919-1920 in Fort Myer, Virginia (Petition for Naturalization)

lives 1924 in Pontiac, Michigan, and says he has lived in <Minnesota>, Illinois, <North Dakota>, and Michigan (passport application)

lives ca. 1945 in Napa, Calif., which is very near to Santa Rosa and Sonoma (WW II card).

The newspapers have "H. Hokensen" (or "Hokenson") of Minneapolis <Minnesota> playing chess in 1912, and H. Hokenson of Grand Forks <North Dakota> playing chess in 1915. And H. Hokensen playing chess in Philadelphia 1918-19.

Helge and Harry may be the same?

Tabanus: There are no good finds of Harry Hokensen before 1930, and no mention of any death of Helge Hokensen in the sources (that I can find). I suggest this:

Phony Benoni: <tabanus> fantastic work. It seems the only significant question left is to establish his forename.

Given that "Harry" only begins to appear after his naturalization request in 1919-1920, it seems safe to assume that he "Americanized" his name at that time. If that's true, he would have been "Helge" in 1912 and 1915.

Still, in this situation I would general prefer the naturalized name on the grounds that the person himself chose it, thus expressing a preference. (I have known several naturalized citizens who have absolutely insisted their new name be used, even for games they played before the change.)

If we had a few games of Harry Hokensen, the decision would be clearer. But we have (probably) only Helge Hokensen, so it's a question.

Tabanus: <PB> Yes, Harry would be fine also. And should perhaps be preferred. But I already requested Helge (yesterday). I can request back if necessary. His name is still Helge on the WW II card in 1942.

His wife Nina was from Denmark. On the US Nat. index 3 Aug. 1931 is typewritten "Nina Hokensen" and "Name changed from Anina Jensine Hokensen" (so after marriage in 1924). Another Nat. Index card from 21 April 1931 has only "Anina Jensine Hokensen".

Unlike his wife, I find no <formal> document with his name Harry. Except the California Death Index online database! And the US 1920 census has "Helge".

shows him in 1885 also, as <Helge Amandus Haakensen>. His father is music corporal - and a "national music leader" in 1900.

Phony Benoni: <Tabanus> I was just voicing an opinion, and have no great argument with <Helge>, especially since that's the name he used at the time these games were played.

And, really, since you did all the work and are best acquainted with all the facts, I trust your choice.

Thanks again for all your work. It may be "fun" for you, but it's still an outstanding contribution.

Tabanus: <Phony> Thanks. I had to make an extra effort since he was from Norway! Btw all you need these days is a genealogy site like Anc....com and access to online newspapers, say two paysites. Plus time and determination.

It may be that he used Harry even in 1912 and 1915, impossible to tell. If a real Harry game turns up, I have no problem in changing it.

I see his destination in 1907 was 60 Ottawa St., Muskegon Michigan. Perhaps a relative, or job opportunity.
