Dec-24-13 | | Karpova: According to page 84 of the March-April 1915 'Wiener Schachzeitung', a <E E Cobb> from Patterson won the 1915 New Jersey State Chess Association Championship (44 participants). The same player? |

 | | Tabanus: <Karpova> Perhaps, but several newspapers 1916-1920 have "E. M. Cobb of Austin, Texas". I cannot find him. |

 | | Phony Benoni: <Karpova> <Tabanus> The "American Chess Bulletin", March 1915, p.57, reporting ont he New Jersey Championship, gives champion as <E. E. Cobb>, age 28, born and bred in Paterson N.J. He had played in the state championship for the last three years, so any connection with Austin, Texas (from where E. M. Cobb definitely hailed) was in the future. The "Memphis Chess History" blog currently has a report on the 1920 Western Championship, in which E. M. Cobb played: http://memphischessclub.blogspot.com/
This quotes several issuex of the "Memphis commercial Appeal, the issue for September 25 stating that <E. M. Cobb> served for several years as the operator of Ajeeb (Automaton). If true, this could indicate a East Coast connection, but there still seems little chance of a connection with the youngish <E. E. Cobb.> |

<Texas sent E. M. Cobb to represent the Lone Star chess. Mr. Cobb's home is in Austin. He is well known to players in Memphis.> |

 | | Phony Benoni: if <E M Cobb> was born in Sweden, might "Cobb" have been an Anglicized form of his name? |

 | | Tabanus: Great guys! Then
1900 Census has Eric Cobb, b. May 1860 in Sweden, immigrated in 1882, living in Kansas City. Occupation: Barber. Married to Hattie M. (who is b. 1863 in Sweden) 1910 Census has Eric M. Cobb, b. abt. 1861 in Sweden, living in Jackson, Missouri. Occupation: Barber. Married to Melsena. 1913 US City Directories has Eric M. Cobb living in Dallas, Texas. Occupation: Barber. 1914 US City Directories has Eric M. Cobb living in Austin, Texas. Occupation: Barber. 1918 US City Directories has Eric M. Cobb living in Austin, Texas. Occupation: Barber. Married to Melcina. 1920 US City Directories has Eric M. Cobb living in Austin, Texas. Occupation: Barber. Married to Melcina. 1920 Census has E. M. Cobb, b. abt. 1861 in Sweden, living in Travis, Texas. Barber, married to Florina. 1922 Missouri Marriage Records has Eric M. Cobb, age 62, married in Jackson, Missouri 7 June 1922 to Ida L. Melton. But then... problems finding more. He may have changed name after coming to US, but the 1900 census says his father was born in New York (and his mother in Sweden). |

 | | Stonehenge: Something confusing:
<But we got up early the next morning and left for Austin, to look for an apartment...Our next home was on Brazos St.. across from the Capitol building. A Mr. and Mrs.Fred Cobb, were our new landlords, Mr. Cobb was a barber and the state champion chess player, he had his trophies on display in the living room of his house, we had the nicest apartments and real friendly people to associate with, He would spot me a rook or knight when we played chess, he also had some of the finest chess men that I had ever seen,, I think he let me win once in a while, so that I would play with him. I enjoyed watching him and some of the University Faculty play.> http://www.oocities.org/heartland/p... |

 | | Tabanus: <Stonehenge: Something confusing:> He may remember wrong (Fred), or he actually was called "Fred" by friends. It's no doubt the same guy, named Eric M. Cobb. The one in New Jersey is another Cobb (Edward). I think we have enough to request "Eric Cobb"? |
