He certainly was! Another example was the "Cereal City" Open in Battle Creek in mid-1973. Brattin was going to be the tournament director, but had major surgery just prior to the tournament. He couldn't direct the tournament, but he could play, which he did from his hospital bed using a telephone, scoring 2.5/5.
