Tabanus: I had a look in Brooklyn Daily Eagle. His name is often spelled out because there was also a Milton Rosenthal.<The chess players at Commercial High School have elected the following officers: Maurice Rosenthal, president; Max Kase, secretary. The team selected for the championship matches is composed of M. Rosenthal, Fred Rothermel, I. Harkavy and A. Scocco.> (Brooklyn Daily Eagle, 14 Nov 1912, p. 3)
<The Brooklyn Interscholastic Chess League has organized for the season with the following officers .... Milton Rosenthal, Thomas Jefferson H. S.> (Brooklyn Daily Eagle, 23 March 1933, p. 20) (H. S. = High School)
Assuming there was only one Maurice R. playing chess, and if 16 years old in 1912 he should be born ca. 1896? Looking in the US Census for New York, 1940, we find many Maurice Rosenthal but three singles out:
Maurice Rosenthal, 49, b. in Russia. Lives in Norwich Connecticut but lived in Manhattan in 1935.
Maurice Rosenthal, 50, b. in Russia. Lives i Kings, New York.
<Maurice Rosenthal, 43, b. in Italy.> "Stenograpter District Attorney", Lives in Kings, New York. He lived in Brooklyn both in 1930 ("Lawyer") and 1920 ("Lawyer Private Practice"). The 1900 Census says he was born in 1896 and came to USA in 1897, and that the father was born in Hungary and the mother in England.
The World War I Draft Reg. Card says born <14> June 1897 in Leghorn, Italy. (= Livorno, Italy).
US Social Security Death Index has a Maurice Rosenthal born <15> June 1897, died January 1985 in Philadelphia. I think this may be him, but there were unbelievably many Maurice Rosenthal's around.
The BDE 7 June 1934 has a game between Maurice Rosenthal and another lawyer, Lester Samuels.
Too thin to put dates on?
