Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-11-14  zanzibar: There is also an "I Stefanov" listed for ~4 games from this tournament.

Clearly, "I Stefanov" and "P Stefanov" are the same player and the database should be corrected. Other games by this player are sparse to nonexistent.

I can't offer much more help, except I found a similar discrepancy with the Mill Base (katar.weebly.com) by doing a crosstable with SCID (it had "Stefanov" and "Stefanov, I").

Mar-11-14  Karpova: Di Felice ('Chess Results, 1964-1967', p. 262) has <P. Stefanov> participating in Kislovodsk 1966: http://books.google.de/books?id=l3D...
Mar-12-14  zanzibar: Thanks <Karpova> for that information. I was actually ignorant of Di Felice's books/project...

A generally favorable review, which points out some weaknesses in Di Felice's work, can be found here:

http://www.chesscafe.com/text/revie...

(I was aware, a little, about Gaige's work).

I'm doing this database exploration guided by a collection of tactical positions, so I'm finding some obscure games/players.

For the record, I believe P. Stefanov is correct, as I found another tournament from around the same period, with 7 games by a P. Stefanov (4.0/7) in RUSbase - Leningrad tt, 1960

There is one (rather famous) game from this tournament on chessgame.com:

Boris Spassky vs William James Lombardy
World Student Team Championship 1960

Spassky vs Lombardy, 1960

(Chessgames.com has only one game matching above event, RUSbase has 364 games.)

The RUSbase site is missing the Kislovodsk tournament, despite claiming to have 66/66 games in zipfile. It does have a crosstable with Stefanov,P.-Bulgaria, scoring 2.5/11.

I've since managed collect the entire Kislovodsk 1966 tournament from MillBase, chessgames.com, 365chess.com and chesstempo.com. Even the RUSbase's xtable is incomplete, so I might have the only complete version (Q- what about Megabase?).

Thanks again.

Mar-17-19  Knightcarver: According to the Olimpbase site for team chess, his name was Parik Stefanov and he played on the Bulgarian team.
Mar-17-19  whiteshark: Then again he would have been only 12 y-o in 1966 Parik Stefanov

hmmm
