Aug-10-14  waustad: This is probably a partial name, since she appears to have two first names and a last name. That is typical in el Norte, but not in Centroamerica. My guess is that on her cedula that Ana Daniela is her first name and that she has two family names, the first of which is Madrigal. It was always interesting trying to fill out the documents to enter Costa Rica because naming conventions didn't mesh. After 10 years of my visits they changed the document so that it would be easier for the norteamericanos and europeans to understand.
Aug-10-14  cro777: Her name is Ana Daniela Bodán Madrigal, the first Nicaraguan to get a FIDE title in women's chess. She has a degree in banking and finance.

Ana Daniela is currently playing on board 1 for Nicaragua at the Tromso Olympiad (Women).

Her brother IM Mariano Madrigal is also in Tromso playing for Nicaragua in the Open section.

WFM Ana Daniela Madrigal (r.) and WFM Kathy Mendieta, boards one and two of Nicaragua.

Aug-10-14  zanzibar: I'm curious about the last names...

Which is the patronymic? Matronymic?

And, which is used for what in Nicaraguan (i.e. is it like the Spanish tradition - where the short form uses the patronymic).

I did find this:

<Nicaraguans have two family names: the mother's family name, which acts as a surname (last name), followed by the father's family name. For example, Mario Garcia Sanchez would be addressed as Señor Garcia. Garcia is Mario's mother's family name, and Sanchez is his father's.>

Apparently non-conforming with Spanish/Cuban/etc. name conventions.

Aug-10-14  cro777: <zanzibar: I'm curious about the last names... Which is the patronymic? Matronymic?>

To be more precise, her name is Ana Daniela Madrigal Bodán. Her parents are Mariano Madrigal Rodríguez (father) and Cora Bodán de Madrigal (mother).

Her brother IM Mariano José Madrigal Bodán is a young Nicaraguan hope in chess.

Aug-10-14  zanzibar: <cro777> thanks for that info.

Is the name <A D Madrigal Bodán> the new Nicaragua format, conforming to traditional Spanish order then?

In other words, <Madrigal> is the patronymic, <Bodán> the matronymic - and where a newspaper would refer to her as <A D Madrigal>?

(Sorry to be so slow on this, but the ref I cited above suggests Nicaraguan names didn't follow the more prevalent Spanish convention. In addition, you previously referred to her as <A D Bodán Madrigal>)

Aug-11-14  cro777: <zanzibar> I'm not an expert in naming conventions (different countries and cultures have specific ways of addressing). I have used examples from their chess writings, but we may draw conclusions indirectly.
Aug-11-14  zanzibar: <cro777> OK, thanks again.

I'm always in student mode on this stuff.
