Gull started to recognize the win with 44 g5!

It quickly produced the King march to d2 to control the knight, then the Queen was free to go to a4-a7-a8, and then, made a beautiful pawn push 52 d6 that allows a capture with check.

Not often do computers produce such thrilling games. Bouquet 1.8 (3073) was tied with Gull (3076) before this game, trailing only Stockfish and Komodo.

Looks pretty deceiving, as at the TCEC Season 7, Stage 1a tournament, just over half way through (7 rounds out of 13), Gull is actually in the lead.

1. Gull 6/7
2. Chiron 5/7
3. Hannibal 5/7
4. Stockfish 4.5/7
5. Critter 4.5/7
6. Spike 4/7
7. Cheng4 4/7
8. Protector 3.5/7
9. Gaviota 3/7
10. Octochess 2.5/7
11. Toga II 2.5/7
12. Tornado 2.5/7
13. Arasan 1.5/7
14. Alfil 1.5/7

Normally, it's been 12 engines with the top 5 (plus maybe a wild card) advancing, but it looks to be different this year. Regardless, Gull is pretty much a lock to advance to the next stage.

As for the strength of the opponents, so far, the average score of the first 7 opponents is 3.21 (22.5/7). The average score of the remaining 6 opponents is 3.41 (20.5/6). However, Gull has already faced the other 3000+ engines, Stockfish and Critter, beating and drawing them respectively.

Penguincw: Update: Gull ends up winning the Stage with 10.5/13, half a point ahead of Critter. Also advancing were Chiron, Stockfish, Protector, Hannibal and Cheng.
Dec-12-14  dumbgai: Interesting, after 20-some rounds of TCEC Season 7 Stage 4, Gull actually has a positive score against Stockfish and Houdini, but a big negative score against Komodo.
