EDWARD DUDLEY
(born 1807, died Apr-11-1879, 71 years old) United States of America

[what is this?]

Edward Ambrose Dudley was born in Fayette Co., Kentucky, as the only child of Elizabeth 'Betsy' Lewis (1782-1807) and Colonel Jeptha Dudley (1778-1867) who married in 1805. His mother died shortly after his birth, and the father married her sister Sallie Lewis (1778-1867), by whom Edward may have been raised. In 1838 he married to Sarah Meredith Russell (1820-1879), daughter of Thomas Allen Russell who battled and was captured at River Raisin. They had two sons, Jeptha (ca. 1839-1878) and Thomas (ca. 1844-1852). The family lived in Lexington (Fayette Co.) before moving to Ellington, Adams Co., Illinois, in 1851. Here they purchased 160 acres of farmland and timber where he raised race horses, dairy and beef cattle, and hogs. An anti-slavery, pro-union man, he was chairman of the Republican Party of Adams Co. in 1856 and served as a delegate to the first Republican state convention in Bloomington, where he spoke against the extension of slavery to the territories. Jeptha ran the farm, but after he died in 1878, and Edward and Sarah in 1879, the Dudley farm was sold to the Illinois Soldiers' and Sailors' Home (today: Quincy Veterans' Home).

Before moving to Quincy he was a member of the Lexington chess club, and was considered one of the best in the 'western states'. In 1847 he played matches vs Benjamin Raphael (+6 -5 and +10 -15), R. Beattie (+11 =1 -1) and John Shaw (+18 -6). In 1850, he and Lexington was visited by Johann Jacob Loewenthal (+8 -11, +3 -11 and +5 =3 -11). In 1862 he also played against Ernest Morphy (+0 -2).*

Tabanus: I believe it is Colonel Dudley that had the fruit farm in Quincy till he died in 1867. Colonel Dudley also had a son from a first marriage: Jeptha Dudley born 1802. This Jeptha had a son named Jeptha born ca. 1839, who is living with his parents in 1860 as a student in Lexington College* of Physicians and Surgeons.

Edward’s son Jeptha (also born ca. 1839) however is farmer in Quincy in 1860. In 1870 he is listed there with §15000, next to his father who's estate value is §70000.

Edward’s occupation in Lexington is unclear to me, the almost unreadable 1860 census suggests ‘retired merchant’.

Based on the obituary of Edward, Edo chess thinks that he was born in 1805 or 1806. However the censuses suggest 1807. Possibly he was born at the time of his mother's death.

Edward's wife Sarah was said to be <of an affectionate and impulsive nature, and strong in her friendships. She was a fond and devoted mother, and it was from exposure to the inclement weather of winter, while communing in sorrow at the graves of her children, that she contracted an illness which proved fatal.> She died 24 Feb. 1879, Edward 11 April 1879.

One internet source (apparently family tradition) says the son Thomas died 8 years old. Other 2nd hand sources say “1884”, but that should probably be read as “before 1884”. Plus he is not listed in the 1860 census – hence the “1844-1852”.

Benjamin Winslow Dudley, the well-known doctor that someone was asking about, was Edward’s uncle (Colonel Dudley’s brother). Another one of the 14 children of Rev. Ambrose Dudley (1750-1825)! The Dudley’s were many, and of old wealth.
