GrahamClayton: Barrie Mulligan (b. 1952; d. 2022) suffered from polio as a child which resulted in life long mobility issues, but encouraged him to take up chess. Finding it difficult to play OTB, Mulligan took up CC in the early 1980's, but work pressures prevented him from playing at the highest level. He retired from CC, but returned in 2010, and won the Australian CC championship in 2015, 2017 and 2019, as well as finishing 1st in the 15th Afro-Asian Zonal tournament. He was competing in multiple events when he passed away.
Sep-29-22  SChesshevsky: Think Barrie Mulligan's story is what chess is about. His really beautiful win v. Jacobsen suggests that he deserves more games in the CG database.
Jan-08-24  BMulligansDaughter: A small correction to Graham's comment. Barrie played chess almost his whole life, playing CC from hospital through the post while recovering from surgery relating to the Polio he contracted at 18mths old. He was also a member of the UNSW chess club for 1 year in the early 70s and was involved in their G-grade team - which won their grade in the City Championships. He continued to play CC for a few years in the late 70s before giving it up in the early 80s due to having children. He started playing again in the early 2000s.

Dad loved chess, it was a constant part of his life even when he wasn't playing competitively. He is dearly missed by his brother, son and daughter.
