MissScarlett: Gustavus Reichhelm in the (Philadelphia) Times, January 21st 1883, p.8:<To Mr. James Wibray, the well-known New Orleans chess player, we are indebted for the discovery of manuscripts containing thirty-two games not hitherto published between the celebrated Paul Morphy and Charles A. Maurian. In each game Mr. Morphy gave the odd of queen's knight, and the games themselves are a selection from four series between these players, which resulted as follows: First series - Morphy, 6; Maurian, 3; drawn, 2. Second series - Morphy, 3; Maurian, 3. Third series - Morphy, 7; Maurian, 10. Fourth series - Morphy, 0; Maurian, 4. From this it will be seen that towards the latter part of the play Mr. Maurian had become too strong for the odds. As a specimen from this treasury of games we present the following sparkling Muzio gambit, which is played with the customary vim and brilliancy of the great master.> Morphy vs Maurian, 1857
(Philadelphia) Times, February 4th 1883, p.7:
<We find on examination that the Morphy "Muzio," published some weeks ago, and three other games of the "thirty-two" newly-discovered games of Paul Morphy, have already been published in Max Lange's book. The remaining twenty-eight games have, however, never seen the light.>
St. Louis Globe-Democrat, December 24th 1887, p.11:
<The Sunny South is publishing some Morphy games supposed to have been unpublished, but as there is some doubt about their having before been given to the world, the chess editor should thoroughly investigate before proclaiming them as such. It seems that Mr. James Wibray, of New Orleans, now of Denver, Colo., borrowed a manuscript book from Mr. C. A. Maurian, and copied down all of Morphy's games contained in it. He did not, however, discriminate between the published and unpublished ones, and hence the games that are being contributed by him to the above-mentioned newspaper may or may not have once been published. We call the attention of Brother Redwine to these facts, as he may not be aware of them.>
(Atlanta) Sunny South, January 7th 1888, p.7: <Mr. James Wibray, of Denver, Colorado, sent us in the spring of 1887 the scores of some Morphy Games, about one half of which we have published. In sending them to us Mr. Wibray stated that they had never been published and that Mr. G. Reichelm [sic], of Philadelphia had carefully gone over the games and verified the fact. We did not and could not question the statement nor Mr. Wibray's right to the scores. The Globe Democrat, however, intimates a question as to both the originality of the games and our right to them. We will, therefore, publish no more of the games.>
