GrahamClayton: The only player in the database with an identical middle name and surname?
Jan-04-17  zanzibar: Typically, that's <switch>'s domain...
Jan-06-17  vonKrolock: But in Spanish the father's name comes first - so the Perez in the middle is actually the surname
Jan-06-17  vonKrolock: ... And both Perez Perez games are against Fernandez Fernandez (Im not stottering, you're not seeing double...)

WannaBe: Actually, what got me fascinated (doesn't take much, trust me), is the tournament.

Spent sometime lookin' up who this mystery Rene Basarrate was.

At least, in January 2016, another memorial tournament was held:

https://ratings.fide.com/tournament...

According to one player's FIDE card, 2005 was 6th memorial tournament of Rene Basarrate, there are no record of Rene as a chess player or anything on Wiki that I could find, maybe he was a revolutionary?

(Since all the tournament are held in Cuba)

Jan-06-17  vonKrolock: The first group of military pilots from Cuba, created in 1934, included a Second-Lieutnant RenĂ© Basarrate MirĂ³
Jan-06-17  zanzibar: <WannaBe> from 1937 comes a newspaper report about a Cuban naval pilot wounded in a crash...

There is also a Basarrate Street in Havana.

Jan-06-17  zanzibar: ... oh, and see <vonKrolock>'s comment.
