Olimpiu Urcan wrote this scathing article a while ago, sharply (and rather unfairly, I must add) criticising CG for its perceived shortcomings and flaws. I played in the same tournament as Urcan twice this summer in Singapore. I asked him about the article and he replied in the affirmative after a few moments of thought. We were in the middle of a tournament and I didn't feel like pressing the matter any further. Never got to play against him, but I found his games quite impressive. Unlike what his angry article may have represented, he came off as quite a rational person. Urcan won both the tournaments with considerable ease, dropping just half a point in a total of 14 games. Jul-17-15 | | wordfunph: "The joys of being a chess master: having your play discussed at Chessgames.com, your results and everything else commented upon by Mark Crowther, your books reviewed by John Elburg and Sean Marsh, your writings stolen by Raymond Keene, and your obituary written by the British Chess Magazine." - Olimpiu G. | | Telemus: Occasionally I have here at CG reproduced some tweets by Mr Urcan. One should not be forgotten here: https://twitter.com/olimpiuurcan/st... The text is: "Who are the least classy chess writers? Obvious nominations for their lack of refinement are Mark Crowther, Tim Harding, Raymond Keene, Susan Polgar and Kevin Spraggett." Of course, this is nothing but a hate list which he spread about his thousands of followers. It got only 14 likes, which I think is a good sign. And it got 21 replies, most of them condemnatory. Another good sign. One of them is due to another CN correspondent (Gerard Killoran), but he critizes only one name in the list and not the idea itself. Mig Greengard suggested to delete the tweet, but instead Mr Urcan blocked at least one follower. As long as this tweet exists, one can claim that CN welcomes haters. |

Nov-01-20 | | cameosis: i too had the impression that the chess notes support group have the dire need to compensate for something, given their style of writing. someone who refers to himself by the imperial plural really shouldn’t be taken seriously. |

Apr-01-22 | | Z free or die: I think his tweeter account is open. But I believe he's changed his name, which is a bit confusing to me. < Olimpiu Di Luppi (né Urcan) > https://capaproject.com/author/
Can somebody explain the name change?
His tweeter account is here:

Apr-01-22 | | Z free or die: FWIW - Looking at the archived version it seems the new tweet thread begain on Jan 13, 2022. Of course, I could be off by a day or two. |

Jul-19-22 | | stone free or die: Nobody knows anything about the name change? |
|
Jul-19-22
 | | Retireborn: Wiki describes him as being "of Italian and Turkish heritage", so likely he's (for whatever reason) started using the surname of his Italian parent instead of his Turkish one. |
|
Jul-19-22 | | stone free or die: That's certainly a possibility <Retireborn>, but do we know the lineage matches up to suggest it? An alternative hypothetical, completely speculative, is that he recently was married and took his partner's name. Just for example.
I'm still a bit curious - partially given that "Urcan" was an established "market brand". Well, it was in certain quirky corners of the universe. Side note- I don't think Winter, who refers to him in some recent, though intermittent, <CN> posts, has yet to use the new name. |
|
Jul-19-22 | | stone free or die: Oh yeah - his bio should, at the least, mention the name change. |
