MissScarlett: Do we know when <F.G.> started playing in Britain?

There's source for confusion because there was a Birmingham-based player, <C.G. Butcher>, active in the mid-1930s.

Nov-01-16  Nosnibor: There is also A.J.Butcher from the West Midlands area who was born in 1900 and I had the pleasure of drawing a game against him in the 1966 Staffs Open. The only game he has in the database is a win against Tony Miles in the 1969 Staffs Open ! Is also related to F.G.Butcher ?

MissScarlett: It turns out that <F.G.> is the father of the twins Alfred Joseph Butcher and Cecil George Butcher. The Butcher clan were fixtures on the Midlands chess scene for several decades.

MissScarlett: Francis was born to British parents in 1873/74 in or around New York, as was his sister Mary, c.1876. At which point the family returned home, because a succession of brothers and sisters were born in or around Birmingham.

jnpope: Family tree at Ancy.com has him born in Albany, NY, 1874.

MissScarlett: Yes, but none of the attached sources that I saw specified that.

jnpope: Some guy named Saunders did some digging into him back in 2023...

"I have since received a message from a great-grandson of Francis George Butcher who confirms that FG was the father of CG and AJ. He tells me that FG was born in Albany, NY, and enjoyed painting."

jnpope: Also seems to think he was born in 1874.

So that's probably the source data used in that family tree(?).

MissScarlett: Just waiting for somebody to invade this thread with cries of <RICKY!>.

Meanwhile, I note that Francis's father, George, is listed in the 1891 census as a minister of the <Catholic Apostolic Chuch> ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catho...) but also as a 'portrait painter.'

Jun-05-25  stone free or die: BBC = Bert's BBQ Channel?

(West Enders?! Gheesh, wrong side of the burnt ends)

Jun-05-25  stone free or die: OK, I watched a few clips - seems to be an awful lot of drama and yelling.

Not sure if it's my cup of tea...
