MissScarlett: Wikipedia: <Grace, the widow of Freeman, had won a minor chess tournament in Tokyo, and played Alexander Alekhine in a simultaneous exhibition at Tokyo 1933. Her prize was one of Alekhine's books. She asked him to sign the book and their relationship developed from that moment.>

As I indicated in this post (Alexander Alekhine), the couple had previous.

MissScarlett: To be absolutely sure that the Grace Freeman who particpated in Alekhine's Regiment Armory simul (Game Collection: Alekhine takes Manhattan (and Staten Island too)) on November 8th, 1932, was his future wife, I searched the passenger records of incoming ships at http://www.libertyellisfoundation.o... (free membership required).

I was pleased to discover that <Grace Freeman> arrived in New York on the ship <S.S.Leviathan> that had left Cherbourg, France on October 28th - a typical transatlantic journey at the time took 5-6 days, so arrival would've been on 2nd/3rd November.

The passenger information states she is 46 years old, a widow, her occupation is artist, she understands English and French, her nationality is English (obtained through her last marriage to Archibald Freeman), she was born in New York, NY (actually Beverly, NJ), her previous residence was Paris, and that her immigration visa was only issued on October 27th, i.e., the day before embarkation.

The major discrepancy is her age - she's passing as 46, when she's actually 56. We can be sure this isn't merely an admin error, because she has form: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903...

Tomorrow, I'll address the thorny question: where was Alekhine in all this? And even more importantly - where was the current Mrs. Alekhine?

It's not clear if he's trying to kiss her or resuscitate her.

Oct-06-16  brankat: It appears to be a kiss, otherwise she'd most likely be on her back.

Where was Alekhine, Mrs.Alekhine? Was Grace 46, 56, 106? Did they have sex while AAA was still married?

You should be writing a Gossip column for a Hollywood magazine :-)

Oct-26-16  TheFocus: Didn't she have something to do with Alekhine?

MissScarlett: Hemingway defined courage as Grace under pressure. Alekhine must have had a lot of bottle hitting that on a regular basis.
