Explicit mention of Captain Bothe can be found here, including various stations of assignment:

<Messages from the present.

18. (Chess Club in Crefeld.) The Chess Club in Crefeld, which has existed for twelve years and has a relatively large number of members, meets daily in its own social room, currently the Café Reich. The current president is Mr. F. Brüggemann, and the secretary is Mr. R. Lichtenscheid. The Chess Journal has reported extensively on the previous successful matches of this highly acclaimed chess club. Last year, it was also reported how a brave military triumvirate in Wesel, consisting of Lieutenant Colonel von Hannecken, Captain Bothe I., and Lieutenant Baron von Eynatten, achieved a victory over the renowned club. On November 14th of this year, the Crefeld Club, as Lieutenant Colonel von Hannecken informed us in a kind letter, requested a rematch. Since such a match had been promised earlier, the last-mentioned valiant chess fan felt he could not refuse it, even though Captain Bothe had since been transferred to Stettin, and Lieutenant von Eynatten was in out-of-town cantonments at the time, thus leaving him completely alone. He therefore assumed sole responsibility for the match, but from the tenth move onward received the assistance of his comrade from the previous year, Mr. von Eynatten, who had since returned. We are publishing this second very interesting game under No. 1426 in this issue and can recommend it for special study as important for both the theory and practice of the game. Recently, the tirelessly active chess club in Crefeld is said to have entered into another correspondence match, this time with the Leipzig Chess Society Augustea. We hope to be able to provide further information about this equally promising match later.>

Not sure what the abbrev after his name (I.) represents.

Jun-04-25  stone free or die: By 1865 he was no longer a Captain, but rather an <Oberst-Lieutnant>.

https://books.google.com/books?id=5...

There's a loss there (G-2321), not currently on <CG>.

Jun-04-25  stone free or die: As far as the rank goes, it's close to Colonel:

.

Jun-04-25  stone free or die: Here's another take on the 1860 ref above - where it's made more clear that Bothe handed over an ongoing game (after move 10) due to his reassignment:

Aside - I guess that <I. = Ingenieur> is as good a guess as any.
Jun-04-25  WilhelmThe2nd: This might be <Johann Bothe>:

Jun-05-25  stone free or die: Following <Wilhelm>'s lead I found this:

<VIf. + Johannes Joseph Carl Bothe, * Münster i. Matching the Henriette as well as Stettin data points (as well as Ingenieur).

Gotta be him, maybe yes?

Full name and dob/dod as well.
