John Saunders: Benjamin William Hamilton, born 6 April 1867 (Bermondsey), died Nov/Dec 1957 (Newquay, Cornwall). Played county chess for Kent and in retirement for Cornwall.

Obituary, Cornish Guardian - Thursday 05 December 1957, page 7: "Nonagenarian Who Played Chess Six Days Before Death NEWQUAY RESIDENT HAD BEEN PLAYER IN THE CORNWALL COUNTY TEAM

"Mr. Benjamin William Hamilton, one of Cornwall’s leading post-war chess players, has died at Newquay aged 90.

"A native of London. Mr. Hamilton and his wife went to Newquay on the first day of the war to stay with their son, Mr. R. T. Hamilton, at Chy-an-mor. Since his wife died 2½ years ago he has again been living with his son, now at 24. Beachfield Avenue.

"A founder member of Newquay Chess Club. Mr. Hamilton was the club's match captain and No. 1 player from its inception 10 years ago until his death. He was also playing for Cornwall until two or three years ago when travelling to the more distant matches became too much for him.

"He continued to play for the Newquay Club, however, up to within a week of his death. Only six days before he died he was playing top board and match captain against Truro School. Only a week before that he travelled with his team to St. Just in Roseland.

"The funeral took place on Monday, the Rev. Lionel James officiating. The service was at Newquay Congregational Church and the interment followed at Fairpark cemetery.

"Among those present at the church and at the graveside were his son. Mr. R. T Hamilton, and many representatives of Newquay Chess Club and of the Cornwall County Chess Association."

His son Reginald Thomas Hamilton (31 January 1905 - 5 August 1986) also played chess for Newquay.
