Sally Simpson: See C.N. 8728 for his games v Sir George Thomas and Vera Menchik.

Mr. Winter was interested in Mr. Laing's score books so I sent them to him, he used them and he sent them back.

He was my first team captain and everyone called him Andrew but research has revealed his name was Alexander George. Born 1902 passed away 1982.

More here by Alastair White: (note he calls him Andrew) https://www.edinburghchessclub.co.u...

"Later I discovered another side to <Andrew.> When he discovered that his house was on my own way home, he would sometimes offer me a ‘coffee for a lift’.

It was then I discovered that as well as being a chess player, he was an accomplished pianist and could play complex classical pieces almost to concert standard.

He introduced me to the delights of modern classicists such as Debussy and Stravinsky; and it was an education for me to hear him play ‘La Mer’, ‘The Firebird’, ’Petrushka’ or ‘The Rite of Spring’. It is surprising how often chess and musical abilities go hand in hand."
