John Saunders: Gaige's Chess Personalia gives his full name as Vicente Maria Norberto Portilla, born 6 June 1849, Jalapa, Mexico, died 5 August 1874, New York. Admitted to Emmanuel College, Cambridge, on 8 July 1869 and matriculated there in the following Michaelmas (October) term as a scholar. The matriculation record (which anglicises his name to "Vincent N Portilla") adds the detail "Spanish-Mexican."

Portilla took part in the Oxford-Cambridge correspondence match of March-November 1871, winning his game vs Edward Francis Linton (University College, Oxford). At the time of the UK census on 2 April 1871 he was staying at Bruce Castle School, Tottenham, London, as a visitor. He had attended the school as a pupil.

Portilla was a published problemist, sometimes using the anagram pseudonym P L Travoli.

Whilst at Emmanuel, he played cricket for his college - rather effectively, too, taking five wickets in each innings vs Jesus College in May 1870. Also played cricket for Bruce Castle School, as did F Portilla (a sibling?) from 1867, and represented the University in a match vs Cambridge Town. The online newspaper archive has many reports of his cricket activities during the period 1867-1871.

Aug-08-25  vonKrolock: John Saunders <"Portilla was a published problemist, sometimes using the anagram pseudonym P L Travoli."> It's interesting to learn about this pseudonym, thanks!. Portilla was quite active as a problem composer, having even published a book of his works. He will be remembered for being the first to exhibit a variation with a pair of "Echo Underpromotions," which makes him the most distant (known) precursor of the Babson's idea...
