Aug-12-05  mynameisrandy: "There are many positions in which one cannot get away with "general principles" or knowledge: one must roll up one's sleeves get down to "If I go here, he might go there and then..."

Great quote of the day. This is something we all can identify with, I think. I love that point in the game. It's always the tensest. One wrong move...

  TheAlchemist: Yeah, I usually mess up with the first such move. "I go there, he must go there..." but he somohow goes someplace else...
Aug-12-05  Giancarlo: I think alot of the times, we think:

" If I go there, I want him to go there "

:-)

Mar-12-06  THE pawn: I said so many times to myself: '' Hum, I have right in front of my face the very refutation of the sacrifice I wanna play. Oh well, he's no grandmaster...he won't see it!''

...
until he sees the correct defense.

Nov-26-06  Manic: lol, <THE pawn>, I play a really rarely seen opening where that is the exact case except I play an odd move instead of a sacrifice, and in all the times I've played it, I've only seen the refutation twice.
Mar-25-07  atripodi: Avni is an FM in both OTB play and composition. I know Nunn, Mestel, and Ram Soffer are GMs both OTB and in problem solving. But is anyone doing better at both OTB and composing than Avni (ie, any IMs in both, GM in one and FM in the other, etc.)?
Apr-04-07  atripodi: Seems I've answered my own question. <Yochanan Afek> from Israel is an IM in both OTB and composition (as well as being an international arbiter of both). Guess I'll pose the same question on his board.
Jul-20-08  whiteshark: "No position is so strong that it cannot be ruined by some bad play."

Mar-07-14  whiteshark: Psychological research shows that <creative people> are distinguished, inter alia, by the following characteristics:

< being sensitive to change and ready to respond to it even if it means discarding well prepared programmes;

< being highly tolerant of ambiguity;

< a willingness to take risks;

< and the ability to approach problems by non-conformist methods'.>>>>
