Having made appearances on the chess circuit in Canada during the mid-1970s, he soon enlisted for Graduate Studies at U of Toronto. With another interest in backgammon, he has more recently also been seen in the Los Angeles area in the 1990s.

Wachtel won the New Jersey championship in 1968.
