Rudolf (Rudolph) Smirka was born in Vienna, Austria. He won the New York State chess championship in 1923 and 1927. He was one of the strongest members of the Marshall Chess Club in New York, winning its championship in 1929-1930 after a play-off with Sidney Norman Bernstein.
