Apr-29-07  Akuni: "In 1938 Jack Battell lost all 11 games of the Marshall Chess Club championship and gave up tournament chess for correspondence chess. In a few years, he was the highest rated postal player in the United States." -Bill Wall

I wonder if this is realley true...

Apr-29-07  Caissanist: It seems likely, he is listed as the champion of the Correspondence Chess League of America for 1967.

Jack Straley Battell (as he was usually called) was probably the leading organizer of postal chess in the USA from about 1950 to 1978, when he retired. For many years he ran the postal chess operation for Al Horowitz's magazine <Chess Review>, and continued doing so after the USCF bought that magazine in 1970. The USCF has a brief obituary for him at http://www.uschess.org/cc/absolute/....

Korora: He was also a writer. I am thinking in particular of his short story "The Case of the Missing Chessmen" from the July 1961 issue of Chess Review and reprinted in The Best in Chess a few years later (also taking the opportunity to correct a recurring spelling error in the original), illustrating a position that was a winning position for Black in modern Chess but imminent checkmate for White in Shatranj (and also carrying an implicit Aesop that you shouldn't thoughtlessly create an Apple of Discord that could needlessly set people at odds with each other; the dying sixteenth-century hidalgo in the backstory had made his two benefactors play a game for a treasure he had found).
