Apr-02-14 | | thomastonk: According to "Schachgesellschaft Zürich 1809-2009" by Richard Forster, p 157: "Fluss, Dr. György (Georg) (1886-?)."
I translate the text that follows: Hungarian chemical engineer, Student at the ETH and a friend of the coeval Nimzowitsch. Later he played in Budapest, and published regularly in the Hungarian chess magazine, and at the end of the 1930 he emigratd to South-America. |

 | | MissScarlett: Fluss beat Lasker in the same simul as Lasker vs Breyer, 1911. I'll submit the game. |

Oct-21-18 | | JimNorCal: thomas tonk: "a friend of the coeval Nimzowitsch" Fascinating. "coeval" is a perfectly good word, but one which I've never seen used.
More commonly used by native speakers is "contemporary", as in "Nimzo and Fluss were contemporaries". |

Das Wasser in den Bach tragen ...
'.. The Jewish György Fluss beat a 70-year-old matron to a bloody pulp for the sake of Hungarianness': A unique and unprecedented loud scandal took place on Sunday morning [1938] in the house at 9 Albert Street in Buda, where the widowed Béláné Jancsó, a 70-year-old matron from Nyujtódi, lives with her war widowed daughter. In the early hours of the morning, when the paper carrier appeared, Béláné Jancsó's daughter was waiting at the window and asked if he had brought the Magyarság, because she had heard that the paper had been confiscated. The paper carrier said that unfortunately the paper had been confiscated from her too, but she would see if she could get a copy somewhere. Through the open window, this conversation was overheard by a neighbour, Dr. György Fluss, a Jewish cable company official, who leaned out of the window and attacked the paper carrier and Mrs. Béláné Jancsó with unreproducible abusive language. .. György Fluss broke into their flat and attacked the two defenceless ladies with the following words: - "You vile bastard [scoundrel], you pig head, I will exterminate this dirty Hungarian and every Hungarian who is a pig head and that vile Hungarianism should be exterminated." Continuing his rude abuse, he attacked the seventy-year-old old woman and began to beat her, and when her daughter intervened, he attacked her. The caretaker, who rushed to help, could only restrain the raging Jew, ..' (translated from Hungarian)
https://library.hungaricana.hu/en/v... Fluss was disparaged via an anonymous newspaper article and the above are excerpts of the prosecution/indictment against the paper's editor in chief in 1939.
(Today's long-winded) remarks in CG's degen forum are a testament that 'Judenhass' (antisemitism) comes in many different shades and guises. The case here is certainly a more 'creative' one.
