Fusilli: The USCF website lists him as deceased, but there is no date:

beatgiant: <Fusilli>FindAGrave gives the year of death as 2019:

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial...

Feb-17-23  stone free or die: USCF 2020 yearbook (mostly accurate to Dec 2020) listed him as an active FIDE master:

https://new.uschess.org/sites/defau...

<beatgiant>'s find is nice in that it also shows a chessboard on his tombstone.

Fusilli: <beatgiant> <stone> Thanks. I just edited the bio to add year of death.

Yes, the tomb is pretty cool!

beatgiant: <Fusilli> The place of birth also might not be the US.

See https://www.chess.com/forum/view/ge... where someone posted, "Zakhar Fayvinov was a friend of mine originally from Leningrad & moved to U.S. well into his 50's...." but unfortunately I can't quickly find any better source for that claim.

Feb-18-23  stone free or die: <beat> I saw that too. I'm fairly confident it's correct, given this:

https://players.chessbase.com/en/pl...

It's the same player with a different transliteration for the name <Faivinov Zakhar> from <Chessbase>.

https://players.chessbase.com/en/pl...

It has a 1990 game from Leningrad Open:

<Cherepkov, Alexander--Faivinov, Zakhar 49w (Leningrad op 1990) 1-0>

I believe the Russian version of his name is

<Файвинов, Захар> (should be confirmed, and go into the bio)

But maybe not, as I can't find too many google hits using it.

beatgiant: I found a record under the "Zakhar Faivinov" spelling on olimpbase: https://www.olimpbase.org/playerssc...

This shows he played 7th board on the "Zenith" team in the 1952 Soviet Team Cup: https://www.olimpbase.org/1952sc/19...

Based on the above, I think we could set the country of origin to Russia.

Feb-18-23  stone free or die: <Based on the above, I think we could set the country of origin to Russia.>

Given the comment by his friend in Penn, and the record of his early tournament play, it's almost certain that he's from Leningrad USSR.

(Just wish we could find some more refs in Russian literature though)

Fusilli: I can also add that, if memory serves me right, he had a heavy accent. We played in 2003 (Z Fayvinov vs M Sana, 2003) and exchanged a few words after the game, discussing the endgame.
