Born in Saragossa, Spain. Javier Gil Capape's family moved to Sydney in the early 1980s, where Javier remained until 1990 when he returned to Spain, earning the IM title shortly thereafter.

He competed in the 1984, 1985 and 1986 World Junior Championship, coming 17th in the 1986 event. Also in 1986, he came 3rd in the Asian Junior Championship held in Manila. In Australia, Javier Gil Capape has won the Doeberl Cup, the Sydney Junior championship (twice), the New South Wales Junior Championship (twice), the City of Sydney Championship (twice), the New South Wales Championship, and came 2nd in the Australian Junior Championship. In Spain, he won multiple standard and blitz championships in the city championships in Huesca, Saragossa, and Aragon, as well as taking out first place in the 8th Benasque Open. In 1992, he came =3rd in the Spanish Championship and started working as a professional chess coach.

IM Gil Capape is still a professional chess coach, but has been doing so in Sydney since he returned to Australia in 2006 soon after earning the title of FIDE Trainer in 2005.
