Jul-12-08  bravado1: He is one of the strongest among blind chess players. Forgive me my political correctness, I don't know the proper and acceptable name for blind people in modern terminology. Sightless, with sight impediment?
Jul-12-08  MichAdams: Visually impaired.

Is the word 'blind' unacceptable?

Jul-12-08  waustad: Between the Federation of the Blind and the usage in the Braille Institute's site I don't think it is that big an issue. Blind people I know use the word, though it might bother some people. Of course there is still the NAACP, which has a name that is now decidedly unPC, so mentioning the Federation of the Blind may not help much with this week's acceptable euphemism.
Jul-12-08  bravado1: Thank you. In Poland, where I live, the word "blind" is considered politically incorrect (however, the word Negro is perfectly all right). Therefore, I thought that this word (blind) is no longer used in English, either.
Jul-12-08  Augalv: Thanks <waustad>
Oct-21-08  biglo: Visually impaired embraces partially sighted people as well as those totally blind.
