Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-18-07  pawn to QB4: I had to leave yesterday's York-Sheffield match before congratulating our top man on his draw with IM Richard Palliser. Awesome. I don't know if you'd say he was conceding 40 or so years, or that he had the advantage of that much more experience: but there's no doubt about the 59 BCF grading points (well over 300 Elo by any calculation) he was giving this formidable and highly respected opponent. Sadly (for us) Sheffield were missing a few key players and lost pretty heavily, but Dr Hempson showed himself still a real board one. Some day he'll find the team mates.
Mar-17-10  pawn to QB4: ...and three years on there he is again, winning a very difficult endgame v David M Adams to take Sheffield over the line in the match v York which presumably decides this year's Woodhouse Cup. Sheffield's answer to Viktor Korchnoi, an honour play alongside him.
May-12-21  Nosnibor: A very clever and tricky player. I played him in the last round of the Nottingham Open in April 2009 when I won his Queen for two minor pieces and should have won but misplayed the ending which he conducted in masterly style. This deprived me of a prize and he went on to share the first three prizes with Hebden and William Jones.
