GrahamClayton: Is this actually Leipzig player Jankel Mundsztuk?
Feb-04-24  Alan McGowan: The BCM 1946, p307, has E. Mundsztuk.

Chess, October 1946, p4, gives E.C. Mundsztuk, Holland.

The Hastings and St Leonards Observer, Saturday, 28 December 1946, gave the entry list for Hastings, including E. Mundsztuk (Holland).

The Birmingham Daily Gazette, 1 January 1947, stated: The failure of two noted Hungarian players, R. Salley and E.C.H. Mundsztuk, to arrive at Hastings for the international chess tournament caused concern last night.

The Leipzig player's name has been shown as Mundsztuk, Mundstuck, Mundztuk, and Mundsztuck.

He played in the 1st and 2nd Jewish Chess Championships of Germany (1935 and 1937), but not in the 3rd at Hamburg 1938.

His first name has also been shown as Josef (Kaissiber 1/2001, p34).

Feb-04-24  whiteshark: <Alan McGowan: <He played in the 1st and 2nd Jewish Chess Championships of Germany (1935 and 1937), but not in the 3rd at Hamburg 1938.

Kaissiber shows on p. 36 a complete game <Mundsztuk - Kaphan>, 1st Jewish Chess Championships of Germany, 1936. [Tournament started 25th Dec 1935, 7 rounds Swiss (p.34)]

On page 37 (ibid) it is mentioned that the Chess Club <Blau-Weiß Hamburg> was to organize the 3rd Jewish Championship, but - given the circumstances - it is doubtful that this took place.

Feb-04-24  whiteshark: More details in Kaissiber no 22 (1/2006), p.64-66 with 2 games vs Sammi Fajarowicz

There is also a note dated March 10, 1938, according to which Mundsztuk's emigration was imminent.

Feb-05-24  Alan McGowan: A 3rd Jewish Chess Championship of Germany did take place in Hamburg in 1938. There was a Master tournament and several other events.
