GrahamClayton: Grant Berriman, an Australian player who competed in a "Commonwealth" championship at Oxford in England in 1951.

An article from the "Adelaide Mail", dated 28 August 1954.

"The departure of Grant Berriman to the RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force) at Laverton is a big loss to South Australian chess. Grant is one of the top four players produced by school chess. He came up in the shadow of David Bowman, who won two State championships, and was followed by Josef Hortovanyi and Aivars Lidums.

Although he has not won a State championship, he has twice gone very close and is at present ranked second in South Australia.

Probably his best performancec were his tie for third at Christmas behind Lajos Steiner and L. Endzelins, and his victory at Norwood in 1950 over State champions Arlauskas and Bowman.

Two or three years ago he went to England as the Australian representative in the world junior championship."

Berriman served in the RAAF for 32 years, rising to the rank of Air Commodore.

GrahamClayton: Berriman packed in a lot of chess during his trip to England in 1951, playing in the World Junior Championship at Coventry/Birmingham in mid-June, the Reserves section of the British Championship at Swansea in late August and the Commonwealth Championship at Oxford in late October/early November.
