Oscar Shapiro won the 1939 Massachusetts State Championship. He won the (Washington) D.C. Open title in 1946, 1948, and 1994. In a career that spanned eight decades, he was a fixture at Washington, D.C.-area tournaments and played in top-flight competitions in Europe and the Caribbean.   Tabanus: Oscar Shapiro was born in Boston, Massachusetts on March 18, 1909. In 1939, he won the Massachusetts State Championship. He won the Washington, D.C. Championship several times. In 1951, he won the Virginia Open Chess Tournament. He became a USCF master at the age of 74. He died on January 1, 2002 at the age of 92.

May-26-12  jackpawn: Is it really true that he didn't become a master until the age of 74? Surely it was playing at master level before then given the open tournaments he won.
