THOMAS HAMPTON
(born May-04-1807, died Jun-13-1875, 68 years old) United Kingdom

[what is this?]

"On the 13th of June died, at Dover, Mr. Thomas Inglis Hampton (ætat. 69) of a long-standing heart disease. He had been more particularly ailing for the last 6 months, and the end was not unexpected. The deceased gentleman was one of those energetic and business-like supporters of the game for which the last generation was conspicuous, but in which the present is so woefully deficient. In 1856 he succeeded Mr. Lowenthal as honorary secretary of the St. George's Chess Club, an office which he has ever since held, and he was also treasurer of the British Chess Association from 1861 down to the time of his decease. He will be a serious loss to the St. George's Club, in whose affairs he continued to the last to show unabated interest, and who will undoubtedly find it difficult to replace him." - The City of London Chess Magazine, Volume 2, page 164.

Thomas Inglis Hampton was born in Calcutta, Bengal in 1807. He was an older brother of John William Hampton.

Tabanus: http://www.edochess.ca/players/p182... Rod Edwards says that "Saint-Elme-le-Duc, in Le Palamède (1845, p.30), and Kieseritzky, in La Régence (1851, p.205), refer to the brothers Hampton, so presumably Thomas Inglis Hampton and J. William Hampton were brothers."

I found this in addition: <Yesterday evening, the annual soiree of the Bristol Chess Club was held in the lecture-hall of the Athenæum, and the proceedings were highly enjoyable. There was a large attendance of ladies and gentlemen, amongst the latter being Capt. Kennedy, president of the Bristol and Bath Chess Clubs, Dr. Biggs, Mr. Thorold, Mr. Stephens, <Mr. Hampton (brother to the honorary secretary of the St. George's Chess Club, London)>, and Mr. Newnham, of Bath; ...> (Bristol Times and Mirror, 9 Nov 1865).

Genealogical data nicely confirms the two brothers. I'll post the proof later over at John William Hampton (also known as William Hampton), who apparently was the best player of the two.

Tabanus: In order to compare with his brother:

1807: Thomas Inglis Hampton b. 4 May 1807 baptized 22 Oct 1807 in Calcutta, Bengal. Father: Samuel (India, Select Births and Baptisms) (orig. not seen). This date is used in four different family trees. Two convincing trees have Samuel Hampton 1767-1828 and mother = Ann Isabella 1775-1854. And now I found this: http://www.ciaofamiglia.com/ehfburt...

1833: Thomas Inglis Hampton of St. James, Westminster, Esquire & batchelor married 1 September to Elizabeth Saunders Osborne (Church of England Marriages and Banns)

1841 census, All Souls and Trinity, Marylebone, Middlesex: Thomas Hampton, 30, Sect of ----, Elizabeth, 25, Claudine, 5, Isabella, 3

1851 census, Cavendish square St Marylebone Middlesex: Thomas Hampton, 43, born in Bengal Calcutta, Secty Military & County Club, E. S. Hampton, Wife, 35, Claudine, 14, Isabella, 12, Evelyn, 1

1861 census, St. James Square Westminster Middlesex: Thomas I. Hampton, 50, born in Bengal Calcutta, House proprietor, Elizabeth S., 40, Wife, born in Limerick Ireland, Claudine M., 22, b. in London, Evelyn, 11

1871 census, St James Westminster: Thos. Hampton, 60, b. in Calcutta, Re---- Gent., E. S. Hampton, 50, b. in Limerick, Evelyn, 19

1875: <25. August. The Will of Thomas Inglis Hampton late of 20 King-street St. James in the County of Middlesex Gentleman who died 13 June 1875 at Dover in the County of Kent was proved at the Principal Registry by Elizabeth Saunders Hampton of Worcester Park in the Counrty of Surrey Widow the Relict the sole Executrix.>

He is usually referred to in the newspaper reports as Hampton, the secretary of St. George's Chess Club, T. Hampton, T. J. Hampton, or T. I. Hampton. Whereas his brother is mostly referred to as W. Hampton, William Hampton (once, in The Era, 4 May 1862), or J. W. Hampton (on at least two occasions).
