Oct-30-07  sambo: My nominee for coolest name in the database.
Feb-27-08  wolfmaster: Is this a disease cows get?
Dec-05-08  realbrob: Oxoniensis is a Latin adjective meaning "from Oxford".

Maybe Oxoniensis was an Oxford student or teacher. Not a chess student for sure.

Dec-05-08  whiteshark: Maybe the solution who "Oxoniensis" was can be found here: http://www.chesscafe.com/text/kibit...
Dec-06-08  realbrob: So maybe I was right. Oxoniensis homo quidam cum ignominia perdidit.

perfidious: Oxoniensis got sent to perdition in his only game here, right enough.
Jun-27-15  SBC: There's no doubt that Oxoniensis is Rob't B. Brien. Another pseudonyn, Delta (Rev. John Donaldson), mentioned that fact in the OCt. 1891 issue of the BCM.
Jul-08-15  zanzibar: Yes, I agree with <SBC>, and here's the ref:

https://books.google.com/books?id=C...

and see also Dr. Harding's book <Eminent Victorian Chess Players>

https://books.google.com/books?id=C...

Jul-08-15  zanzibar: See also this:

Robert Barnett Brien (kibitz #2)

Now, if we can just figure out who <Delta> is!

Jul-08-15  zanzibar: I mean what's the source for Delta's identity (since Delta = Rev. John Donalson according to <SBC> (whose track record is pretty good))
Jul-08-15  zanzibar: OK, not so hard to find is this from Tim Harding:

<When a leading Scottish player, the Rev. John Donaldson (known as “Delta”) wrote his chess memoirs in British Chess Magazine, (October 1891, pages 450-9) [...]>

Of course, it would be nice to have another upstream ref (since his BCM ref is the same one I've been using for Staunton/Oxoniensis quotes).

Jul-08-15  zanzibar: OK, here's a definitive ref:

https://books.google.com/books?id=5...

Perhaps a submission of this game is in order?

Jul-09-15  zanzibar: A little more on Delta (aka Rev. John Donaldson):

Jul-09-15  zanzibar: A couple of games from the BCM source transcribed by yours truly:

After White's 21 move (21.Qg2) is this annotation:

(b) One of the weak points of Delta's play is, that he seems to lose heart and self-possession under the pressure of attack. Of what avail can this poor effort prove? Why not have thrown up the Pawn to Q.B. fourth, forcing an outlet of some kind?

Engine analysis suggests 21.Qc3 as best, but gives 21.Qg2 as 2nd best (Stockfish 5 at 24-ply). The move 21.c4 gets punished by 21...h5 and Black can simplify with connected passers in the center similar to the game.
