Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-16-11  cro777: Nikolai Papenin is CC Grandmaster with the current rating 2733 and the 1st position in ICCF World rankig.
Aug-07-11  dakgootje: <the 1st position in ICCF World rankig>

Well, I guess that deserves some more games in the database!

Interesting how young -and completely unnoticed- he is.

Aug-07-11  whiteshark: Looking at his ICCF rating progress datasheet it's incredible impressive to see him skyrocketing from zero in 1q08 to 2733 in 3q11.

http://www.iccf-webchess.com/Player...

Aug-08-11  dakgootje: Yeah, will be very interesting to see how high he will go. Especially since it doesn't seem he is slowing down that much.

Is there a way to import his games from ICCF? They've got a lot of his games.

Aug-08-11  cro777: Here is what the ICCF Ratings Commissioner recently remarked about him:

"With excellent results (201 evaluated games without a single defeat; four GM norms within two years) the Ukrainean grandmaster Nikolai Papenin climbed on the top of the ICCF ratinglist. He is the youngest player we ever had in this position and he will surely defend it for some time. Heartfelt congratulations !" He is 26 years old.

Jan-06-14  dakgootje: <He is the youngest player we ever had in this position and he will surely defend it for some time.>

Surely - except that he didn't.

From a toprating of roughly 2740, he decreased slowly but steadily - before a recent plunge. He's currently roughly 2600.

That's rather odd.

Jan-07-14  cro777: His decline in ratings (in correspondence chess) in the last two years (2012-2013) is really strange. His current rating is 2595 (ranked 51st in the world).

Papenin is currently playing at the 28th World Championship Final.

Dec-19-15  yurikvelo: Papenin peak rating was achieved just about time, when Houdini 1.5a outperform well known and established leader Rybka 4. After Houdini's superiority was proven (April 2011) 'centaur players' who bet on Houdini didn't get advantage over field of Rybka-users (they switched to Houdini).

In interview with Papenin, he said he was using 2 quad-core PC (with Nalimov) and infinite analysis as preferred way of play.
