Jul-17-09  Benzol: There is a game in Wenman's 100 Chess Gems by a W Wurm. I wonder if this is the same player?

100 Chess Gems game has the following score. Wurm's opponent is given as Dr H Geiger ( could be the same opponent as in the game you've given ) with no date given. The only other information is that it says that it was played in Germany.

I did submit this score a very long time ago but as it has never appeared I assumed it was rejected due to the lack of a date. Perhaps I should ask the admins what happened to it.

Jul-17-09  Benzol: <whiteshark> A similar situation occurred with a player named L Zollner. Wenman gave two of his games and neither had a date of when they were played. Subsequently I stumbled on the date of one of them. The other game is given in the thread of L Zollner vs G C Heywood, 1930 if you're interested.

I will keep that in mind. Unfortunately my chess PC broke down yesterday and it is unclear at the moment if the data from the hard disk can be restored.
Jul-17-09  sneaky pete: In some issues of Fernschach, 1931 (incorporated in Kagan's Neueste Schachnachrichten) there is separate mention of Geier and Hans Geiger (Fernwettkämpfe / Deutschland - Oesterreich / Urlaub: Geiger 2.-23.5. and a few lines below that: Unsere Turniere / 1. Meisterklasse / Anmeldungen: Roth, Geier).

The January issue has a register of games published in 1930, with 8 games by Geier, 2 of them on page 26; 1 game by Wurm, on page 26; no games by Geiger. No initials given. I don't have the edition with page 26, but that must be the game from chesslife.de that was started in 1928.

My guess is that Geier was German (and an active correspondence player), and Geiger an Austrian player who only occasionally indulged in this vice. His <Wenman> game against W. will have to remain undated, and even if we found a source and a date, it's only Autolycus style of chess history of course.

Too bad there is nothing in the db with him playing Bird, or even

Bird's Opening (A02)

for that matter!
