Alan McGowan: A history of the Münchener Schachklub 1836-1961 gives a list of Munich City Champions. Schindler - no first name or initial - won in 1927, 1928, 1932 and 1935. On page 10 there is a brief reference to Schindler winning four times, but again no first name or initial. (The Deutsche Schachzeitung 1932 shows Josef Schindler won the Munich Championship; the DSZ 1935 gives only 'Schindler'.)
A history of chess in Bavaria, published 2000), says on p. 61 that Georg Schindler won the 1927 event after beating Hans Gebhard 2½-1½ in the play-off match.
On p. 62 it says that Paul Michel and Georg Schindler shared the title after a play-off match (this also involved Hans Gebhard).
Strangely, this history makes no mention of the 1932 and 1935 tournaments. Were the authors confused?
Georg Schindler is also mentioned in connection with the 1930 Munich Championship, as well as Bamberg 1930, where the Bavarian Congress was held.
There is also a mention of Georg Schindler in the Münchner Neueste Nachrichten of 31 August 1926, p7, in connection with the Bavarian Congress at Pirmasens.
So, did Georg Schindler exist or are references to that name simply wrong?
Incidentally, although the Deutsche Schachzeitung 1972 honours Josef Schindler's 70th birthday on 19 March, suggesting a 1902 birth year, it has since been found that the Deutsche Schachblätter 1969, p238 says something else:-
'...73 Jahre alten Meisters Josef Schindler, der seine beste Zeit zwischen 1925 und 1939 hatte. Aber noch 1949, schon im Alter von 54 Jahren, sicherte sich Schindler die bayerische Meisterschaft!'
Can anyone help?
