 | | Stonehenge: <in regards to Regensburg 1946 and the player Fleischmann :- Das Leben und Schaffen von Klaus Junge 1924 - 1945, by Helmut Reidl ( 1995 ) gives the crosstable with W. Fleischmann ( Oberpfalz ). A Wolfgang Fleischmann ( Weiden ) is mentioned in the 1937 Deutsche Schachzeitung, September, p262. Weiden is in the Oberpfalz district. Wolfgang Fleischmann is also referred to several times in Der Bayerische Schachbund: Aufbruch in das dritte Jahrtausend, a detailed history of chess in Bavaria. ( it also references a Dr Ludwig Fleischmann and Friedrich / Fritz Fleischmann ( Weiden ), but there is no mention at all of a Lorenz Hermann Fleischmann, who is shown as playing at Regensburg 1946. In 1949 a Dr W. Fleischmann played at a tournament in Großröhrsdorf, but that town is not in Bavaria. I suspect this is a different person; if the Bavarian W. Fleischmann became a doctor, I suspect the history would have given him his title. In my Kurt Richter book I show a consultation game that had Richter join with a ' Dr Fleischmann, a visitor from Bavaria ...' but I was unable to confirm his first name. > Source: Alan McGowan |

Jun-22-21 | | Alan McGowan: I have found a few other relevant references:
The Deutsche Schachblaetter 1949 (p146) reports on the Grossroehrsdorf tournament held August 24-28. It mentions Dr Fleischmann, formerly of Bamberg. And looking much further back to the Deutsche Schachzeitung 1934 (p102), there is a mention of Dr Lorenz Fleischmann-Radeberg (formerly Bamberg). Schach 1951, p88, 88 mentions some of the readers who have taken part in the problem solving competitions, including Dr L. Fleischmann (Grossroehrsdorf). It appears, therefore, that the DSB website that shows a crosstable for this event is in error in showing Dr. W. Fleischmann as a participant.
https://www.schachbund.de/grossroeh... As mentioned earlier, the history of chess in Bavaria has several references to W. Fleischmann, but he is never given the title of Dr. If Dr Lorenz Fleischmann had played at Regensburg 1946 I feel sure that he would have been identified with his professional title. Therefore, it still looks more likely to me that W. Fleischmann played there. Still looking for further information. |

Jun-23-21 | | Alan McGowan: Schach-Welt, January 1947, p15 has a brief report on the Klaus Junge Memorial. It shows W. Fleischmann as a participant. It is reasonable to conclude, therefore, that Wolfgang Fleischmann (Weiden) is correct. As shown earlier, he is mentioned several times in reports of Bavarian tournaments, and he also features in the detailed history of Bavarian chess. He was club champion of SK Weiden in 1947, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1956 and 1957.
