CAMILLE MORIAU
(born 1851, died Nov-24-1926, 75 years old) France

[what is this?]
Moriau was a French citizen from Lyons (1), and in the mid-1870s and the beginning of the 1890s, he was an active player in England, both times for a few years with a longer break in between.

During the second period, he competed successfully in the championships of the City of London Chess Club. In 1891, he came in second behind Rudolf Johannes Loman, to whom he lost +1, -2, =1 in the final match.(2) In the following year he became the champion of the club.(3) During this period, he also gave blindfold simultaneous exhibitions on four or six boards, and simultaneous exhibitions.

In later years, he became an official of the City of London Chess Club.(4)

In 1898, the British Chess Magazine wrote: "We are sorry to announce that Mr. Moriau, a well-known and brilliant over-the-board and blindfold player is dangerously ill, and, whatever may happen, it may be taken for granted that his chess career is finally closed."(5) He survived, and served his club as one of its vice-presidents for years.(6)

Oct-16-13  thomastonk: Okay, I've written the above biography for this man, and some days ago I've already submitted three more games; his final loss against Loman in 1891, the win against Dr Smith 1892 that secured him the championship, and another win against Atmore from 1894. The two latter games have been praised in the contemporary newspapers, and I hope somebody will enjoy them, when they are in this database.

I've included the quote from the BCM above, because it is not only interesting, but also relevant to the question whether Moriau could have been Colonel Moreau, which has been discussed by J.Spinrad and others.

Oct-20-13  thomastonk: I would like to thank users <JessicaFischerQueen> and <OhioChessFan> for their great help with his biography. The remaining mistakes are mine, of course.

This man attracted my attention, when I found one evening two games in different sources, which received high praise of his contemporaries. The games are submitted (see above), and I'll drop the related information here.

The "Manchester Times" of June 11, 1892 reported that Isidor Gunsberg described the game Smith vs Moriau as "the finest game he has seen played by an amateur for a long time". I'm sure the final combination was meant.

The game Moriau vs Atmore has been selected by the "Liverpool Mercury" of April 21, 1894 from 108 games of the match North vs South England 1894.

Although it seems that not many of his games survived, two more - not submitted - seem to be remarkable, too.

Another game with Loman has been selected by Ellis for his book "Chess Sparks" (London, 1895, p. 140).

Finally, S.Tinsley commented a game Kaizer vs Moriau from the North vs South team match of 1893 in the BCM, volume 13, 1893, p. 101-102. I quote only his final comment: "A truly exciting game, full of subtleties and hair-breadth escapes, forming, upon the whole, one of the finest exhibitions of real chess that has ever come under our notice. A small volume might easily be written upon it, but the printer waits."

Please, don't expect too much. Now I am done with him.

PS: A drawing of Moriau can be found in "The Penny Illustrated Paper and Illustrated Times" of October 7, 1893. License reasons prohibit that I upload it somewhere, and then provide a link. I am sorry.

Tabanus: The Morning Post gives his name in two different chess columns, 6 May 1889 and 4 Jan. 1892: <Mr Camille Moriau>

In 'Journal de Lyon' of xx Feb. 1872 we find his name again concerning a chess tournament in Lyon: "Si ce projet de tournoi rencontre votre assentiment moral seulement, veuillez le faire savoir par lettre adressée à <M. Camille Moriau>, cours Morand, 26, avant l'époque du 10 mars prochain."

Tabanus: This could be him, from the UK City Directories, London:

"Moriau Camille, button, silk and shirt agent and sole agent for A. Raymond's push and glove buttons & c. 7 Trump street, Cheapside EC-TA "Storeroom""

And this, from the National Probate Calendar:

"Moriau Camille of 11 Gainsborough-road North Finchley Middlesex died 22 November 1926 Probate London 17 December to Marten Llewellyn Evans solicitor and Germaine Antoinette Alderson (wife of Henry William Alderson). Effects L7158 15s. 2d."

Oct-23-13  TheFocus: <Tabanus> I continue to be amazed at the outstanding contributions that you make on this site. I know that I have benefitted greatly from your help.

IIRC, I believe that you said you were writing a book. I would love an autographed copy.

Tabanus: <TheFocus> I wrote two books long time ago, but not about chess. And now I'm writing only here.
Oct-23-13  TheFocus: <Mark> You aren't fooling anyone. You say those sweet things trying to get Uncle Focus to give you a free copy.

But you are going to have to pay for a copy just like everybody else. But I will give you a discount because you have so positively supported this book project. Your often thoughtful and profound observations are a great contribution to the book.

Oct-24-13  MarkFinan: there... is... no... book!!
Nov-05-13  thomastonk: His games are here! Thank you, cg.
PS: <Tabanus> Great finds!!
Dec-26-13  thomastonk: <Now I am done with him.> Okay, one more remark. "Deutsch Schachzeitung" 1873, p 146-7 has a game C.Moriau vs L.Bertrand, played in Lyon on January 26, 1873.
Oct-14-14  Big Pawn: This is outstanding detective work!
Mar-28-16  patzerkiller: Worth playing through for the neat finish.
