CHARLES PATRICK BELTON
(born 1905, died Apr-09-1981, 75 years old) Ireland (federation/nationality New Zealand)

[what is this?]

Charles Patrick Belton was born circa 1905. He was a president of the New Zealand Chess Association and started the North Island Championship in the late 1950's. He also donated a cup for this event which he won on two occasions. Later he formed a building fund for the Auckland Chess Club and donated a large sum of money to this fund. When the Auckland Chess Club and the Dominion Road Chess Club merged to form the Auckland Chess Centre the fund was used to purchase the present club premises. He passed away aged 75 in 1981.

Richard Taylor: Belton owned a real estate business and was President of the Dominion Road Chess Club which formed about 1959, after it broke away from the Auckland Chess Club (due to a dispute). It was situated in the tragically now demolished His Majesty's Arcade in Queen Street Auckland.

I saw Belton around when I was young. The ACC was formed and he was the President, Adrian Lentz the secretary, and Ian Mitchell was the Secretary. Mitchell was a (Russian supporting) Scottish born communist and many and vigorous betwixt him, my father (Les Taylor also on the ACC or Dom Road committee) Sarapu, Belton (the Capitalist), Graeme Mears, (a kind of self employed Social-Democrat who is still with us), and others. Blood was spilt in the fist fights that ensued. Men were hopsitalized...some psychic wounds never healed. Adrian Lentz stipulated that NO ONE was to attend his funeral especially chess players...Lentz, Dutch had parachuted into Indonesia in an attempt to assist Hollands dying grasp on the Indies, and had to kill men. This affected him but I befriended him in the 80s...about 1987 he Graeme and I would sometimes spend 6 hours having coffees and toast and talking crap - I would phone work (just around the corner - to say I was ill): thus we oftn spent our time. Lentz was a likeable fellow despite all. Belton was a rather boring Big Money Suit.

Jonathan Sarfati: I know there was terrible rivalry between Belton and Mitchell. Sarapu was a friend of Belton and couldn't stand Mitchell. I can't recall meeting Belton, but did meet Mitchell when I was about 12, certainly young enough that my mother was with me, probably NZ Schoolpupils' in 1976. I recall him seeming rather old and frail.
Apr-27-20  wordfunph: 1950 Auckland Chess Club Champion. Rest in peace, master Belton..
